Chapter 225 - Last Supper
\'Warm\'
That was what she felt as the heat from the fireplace encapsulated her body.
But contrary to what might be expected, her body was shivering in the cold. The fireplace might have warmed her up but it couldn\'t melt her frozen heart. From the moment she fell into despair she had lost all hope, and hope was the only thing that was keeping her heart warm. And now all that was left was fear and anxiousness.
\'He is going to kill me.\'
A strong killing intent kept tabs on her at all times. She wanted to instinctively run away from there either using her legs or her ability but her hunches were holding her back.
While her body was assaulted with such a plethora of sensations, her nose was assaulted by a familiar scent instead.
She opened her eyes only for the burning orange fire to be reflected into her emerald pupils.
*Crackle* *Crackle*
But as her pupils traveled up, she saw a large piece of meat skewered and roasted in the fire. From time to time, Klautz took out bits and chunks of it and plunged it into its mouth as if chewing a delicacy.
"So you have woken up?" Klautz whispered with a nonchalant expression.
Klautz\'s killing intent had never left her even though his mind was somewhere else. He was the one to have chosen to guard the night due to the circumstances. For, Klautz knew that more than the little girl inside, the monsters outside were more of a threat. Evelyn had stats just a little higher than an average newbie.
Meanwhile, Evelyn was struck with enough fear that she couldn\'t speak for a moment. Her lips parted and closed but no voice left her upper garden to reply.
Klautz words and expressions might look solemn. He might look to be casually eating his meal. But his eyes had a sharp killing intent that was always keeping tabs on her. Klautz superior strength caused her to feel choked and restrained despite the lack of any bars on her.
"How did it feel? Freezing to death? Did you see someone else from the other side of Styx?"
Evelyn could teleport using her skill and escape this plight. But she knew better. There were not many places where she could go. And if Klautz wanted to, he would kill her anyway.
\'Should I run away and ask \'them\' for help?\' Evelyn thought.
His eyes traveled back to Klautz as she shook her head.
\'No, they are the same as him. Once they learn that someone else knows about their secret they will kill me after finding his leads.\'
Evelyn found herself in a desperate situation, where she was surrounded by two predators on either side. She was helpless and didn\'t see a way out. Even with a seemingly rare and invincible ability she was powerless in the face of these monsters. This was the dilemma that most newbies face. They might have talent and good skills but their lack of stats lead them to become the slave of others.
"It would be quite a pity if you kill me,\'\' Evelyn whispered.
Her shoulders drooped as she gave up on the matter. Will begging for her life save her from the predicament? From her experience, it was a big \'No\'.
But Klautz raised his brows.
\'Pity? Why so?"
There was sarcasm in his voice. Klautz had always believed that death was a blessing.
Klautz asked as he munched onto another bite of his feast.
Evelyn shrugged.
"I won\'t be able to see the world anymore."
Evelyn had always lived a life being trapped one way or another. She did have a deep wish to see the world around her. To feel alive.
When she was first summoned to hell, away from her blended family. She had more or less believed that she was finally free to do whatever she wanted. She was reborn.
\'Now I can live my life of freedom.\'
The freedom that everyone took for granted, she never had any of it. But being reborn she had found it in the most unexpected of scenarios. She had found it in the world of hell only for it to be taken away again. Hell was indeed a harsh place.
\'Hmm, see the world huh?\'
Those words did resonate with Klautz. After all, he had lived in darkness his whole life in hell. There was little to no hope for him to see anything that was the world. But Klautz firmly believed that hell was not the kind of world one would want to tour.
Even then Klautz was sure that there was a hidden meaning behind her words. \'Seeing the world\' was a way to represent it. The important thing here was that they both craved freedom. And the subtle direction of the inner meanings wasn\'t lost on Klautz.
"Hmm… Do you prefer meat? Have some."
Klautz tore another chunk of seasoned flesh and passed it onto Evelyn. Evelyn stared at his hand for a minute before finally accepting his politeness.
But unlike what might expect Klautz\'s sharp glare was still on her. The killing intent never subsided. Klautz was prepared to kill Evelyn at any moment. She felt that she was on the edge of the knife.
*Gulp*
As the morsel of meat went down her neck, her neck felt stiff fear and she couldn\'t swallow it.
\'I am going to die anyway. I should at least enjoy my last supper. It\'s quite a pity. But that was how it was meant to be.\'
As she accepted her own situation, her neck loosened up causing the hot and seasoned meat to go down her neck.
"It\'s quite delicious. Can I take some more?"
"Sure"
There was a heavy atmosphere between the two of them as they conversed. But Evelyn talked anyway as she felt her shackles falling off of her as she had accepted her state.
